The Learning Styles Model

 

Different Learning Styles have been researched for many years, but one of the best known, and easiest to use is Fleming’s model. This gives four different Learning Styles –

3. Reading/writing-preference learners

 

4. Kinaesthetic learners or tactile learners

Disgruntled with his debt, the owner sought to sell the bakery.

A buyer came forth and asked for 3-years of financial statements. Initially, the owner presented the buyer with a computer print-out of 3-years of supplier expenditures. The buyer asked for more data. Next, the owner presented the following data:

The buyer asked the owner to submit his “asking price”. The owner initially asked for $25,000.00, plus an assumption of the $40,835.30 debt. The buyer said no. The owner then asked for $50,000.00.

After receiving the owner’s $50,000.00 asking price, the buyer acquired cash register reports from the bakery on two consecutive days, printed at 9:30 am on a Thursday and Friday. The first report showed sales of $800.00. The second report showed sales of $934.00. The reports reflected cash sales only.

The buyer concluded from the cash register reports that the business may actually have had annual revenue of $500,000.00. This suggested that after subtracting total annual expenses of $205,800.00, the business may have had an annual operating profit/EBITDA of $294,200.00. After adding owner’s equity of $904.70, the business value, with an EBITDA multiple of 1.2, looked to be $354,125.64.

The buyer learned that the revenue and expense data delivered by the owner was the same data given to the city and state during the audits. Those were the only financial records. Then, surprisingly, the buyer learned that the revenue data only reflected credit card sales. Thirty-five percent of customers purchased with credit cards. Sixty-five percent of customers purchased with cash!

The buyer offered the owner $30,000.00 as a final offer.

The owner failed to maintain accurate and thorough business financial records. As a result, when he sought to sell his business, he was forced to forfeit at least $324,125.64 in business value.

For anyone who has been to University, one of the aspects they hope to forget sooner is usually the accommodation. However, when it comes to Halls of Residence, it is not just the students who live in them who think they should be torn down. So what are the worst halls in the UK? Aberystwith sits on Cardigan Bay on the West Wales coast, however its primary halls of residence at Penbryn are not considered the universitys most enduring feature. Despite seeming to have had a recent make over and offering students the chance to get a room with a view the building has still been criticised for its terracotta, pastel green and white exterior, and its quick-wearing interior with 20 people per floor. Presumably, this says something about those who like to spend money on drink&and I think I might just be prepared to put up with rats for that kind of convenience!

It is fair to say that as universities receive more investment and living standards improve, whilst increasing competition comes from online courses and home study, halls of residence have started to resemble Swedish resorts more than prisons. So will the grime ever be missed? Well, at least we still have The Young Ones to remind us.

Short List of Growing Support for Parent Education and Older Adults

State Funding for Older Adults and Parent Education Adult Education will end in July of this year.

All along, many folks have thought these programs were valuable.  They simply didn’t think there was enough money to pay for them, coming out of Great Meltdown of Wall Street, Main Street, and Adult Education. Others, like the folks at the LAO (Legislative Analyst Office), thought the mission of Adult Education should be narrowed to a more work-oriented focus.  (They also thought the two systems – K12 Adult Ed and Community Adult Ed should stay as they were – separate, just better coordinated.)   Meltdowns are the perfect time to re-form things because everything is nice and gooey and often there have already been losses, changes, etc.  This idea is the central tenet of the Shock Doctrine.  Before you get too upset about that, just remember that can swing in any direction.  It might be a direction you like.  It might be a direction you don’t like.  It’s just one of those things that’s true and also encapsulated in the idea that crises = opportunity.

In any case, that’s what happened.

Now, as we get close to when these changes –

State funding for Adult Education through the new Regional Consortia Block Grant System will go toward only these five programs:

*   Elementary and secondary basic skills, including classes required for a high school diploma or high school equivalency certificate

  • Classes and courses for immigrants eligible for education services in citizenship and English as a second language and workforce preparation classes in basic skills
  • Education programs for adults with disabilities
  • Short-term career technical education programs with high employment potential
  • Programs for apprentices

go into effect, there is growing support for programs which will no longer be financially supported by the State.

What will happen?

I don’t know.  But here’s a list of the growing support.

My son was able to consistent social interaction, learn social skills, enhance his development and is now I feel prepared for kindergarten, thanks to Mrs. Lori and his current parent Ed Teacher. As for my self I have not only learned so much about positive parenting, but have been able to form bonds and friendships with the other mothers in the class. We were/are able to support each other and share the common challenges and acheviements of our children. Taking this program away would be the worst thing that can happen. You are taking away the opportunity for other parents/future parents to experience these types of programs. The current expectations for entrance to kindergarten is far more advance from when I was a child and I feel that programs like parent/child ed. are the foundation for early childhood education, that will set children up for success. I also feel as a parent/student, attending these classes with our children encourages and motivates us as parents to be more involved in our children’s education. Ontology is the philosophical study of questions about what is real, i.e. what exist. In other words, the study of questions such as what are the fundamental elements in the world, and how are they related to each other?

The etymology of the word ontology

The word ontology derives from two Greek words. On the one hand “onto-”, which translate to “existence” and “being real.” On the other hand “-logia”, which translates to “science” and “study.” Hence, ontology is the scientific study of what exists, etymologically speaking.

Ontological argument

Examples of ontological arguments are, for example: “Physical material is more real than, for example, the concept of love”, and “There are generic elements. And it is possible to describe the relationships between them.” Ontological questions, thus, deal with whether or not elements exist, what they are, and what the relationships between them are. For example, is there such an element as snow? Does snow and skis exist? If they exist, do they exist only in the mind of the observer, or do they exist even if there were no humans around? How about the concept of skiing, does it exist too? If so, is skiing as real as skis? What is the relationship and possible hierarchy between snow, skis, and the process of skiing, in terms of what exists?

Ontological status

It is hard (impossible?) to provide clear and definite answers to ontological questions, and to prove the ontological status of something. It is difficult to agree on what exists, and to provide rock-solid proof that something exists. Especially for the elements that are hard to measure and discuss in an objective way, such as the concept of motivation for example. Thus, an ontological model does not only imply a discussion about the model itself but also a discussion about how it may be possible, if at all, to prove that the model is real. It is not an easy challenge to determine what ontology may help us with, what types of questions can ontology help us answer, and how can ontology help us validate statements that we make about the world around us and about what is real and exists in this world?

Ontologically, how can we prove that something exists?

One way of validating a statement about what exists, is to try and tie the statement to arguments that we have already validated and thus know are true. For example, let us assume that we have agreed that the concept of numbers exist. Given this agreement, we could advance our discussion and further agree that the concept of counting also exists.

Ontological materialism

Materialism is one of two traditional branches of ontology. Philosophers and other scientists who stand by materialism believe that material things, such as particles, chemical processes, and energy, are more real, for example, than the human mind. They argue that reality exists regardless of human observers.

Ontological idealism

The other major branch of ontology is idealism. Philosophers and scientists who follow idealism believe that immaterial phenomenon, such as the human mind and consciousness, are more real, for example, than atoms and physical objects. They argue that reality is constructed in the minds of the observers.

Gene ontology and others: The non-philosophical use of the term

Researchers in fields outside philosophy, for example, gene ontology and computer science, also use the term ontology in a similar way. When they speak about ontology, they refer to a set of well-defined and recorded description of terms, items and relationships that exist within a determined field. For example, all things exist in a defined information system, including the relationship and hierarchy between these things.

Unlike the philosophers, these researchers are not primarily interested in discussing if these things are the true essence, core of the system, or if the elements are more real compared to the processes that take place within the system. Rather, they are, like Linnaeus, focused on discussing, analyzing and presenting a nomenclature and taxonomy. Once the things and concepts that are perceived to exist within a system have been described in writing, they can be used to describe the system, for example when the researchers write down their arguments and results. This, in turn, enables the researchers to communicate and exhange ideas more efficiently when they, for example, write articles and citations in academic documents. Consequently, it enhances the continued discussions and arguments about the purpose, aim and functions of that system.

There are other examples of research fields where the term ontology is used to describe the ongoing scientific endeavors. For example, the project to map out and describe the essential elements in society, and their relationships, may be referred to as a social ontology. Here, the idea is to understand and describe the underlying structures that affect individuals and groups.

Conclusion

In summary, ontology focuses on what exists, the relationship between what exists, and how we may discuss these types of questions. Ontology is truly one of the most fundamental areas of study in philosophy. We have seen that it is also used in other, non-philosophical, academic disciplines, such as bioinformatics, and computer science. For the beginner, regardless whether he or she works in academia, ontological arguments may be perceived as overwhelming and hard to grasp. However, I hope this article has contributed to a better understanding of the concept of ontology, and made you appreciate it for what it is: a tool to help us discuss, argue, and better understand our world.

There are three different learning styles that you differ from person to person. They do not just want to sit on their chairs and watch and listen. They want to act and do something for them to better understand principles. For these people, using gestures and playing games are effective learning methodologies.

It is important to determine which type of learner you are. It will help you understand your NLP training more if the right learning method is employed.

Learning Foreign Languages In The British Education System

The last decade has seen an enormous amount of flux in terms of language teaching trends in British schools, stemming from a 2002 change in education policy that had major implications for both primary and secondary schools. At one end, plans were put in place to have all children from the age of 7 learning a language by 2010, in order to improve engagement with foreign languages and address the problem of Britain’s monolingual culture. At the other end, learning a foreign language at GCSE level was made non-compulsory in order to give students greater license to choose vocational subjects that better suited them.

So what have the consequences of this change of policy been? One immediately noticeable impact has been the sharp decline in the number of pupils taking a foreign language at GCSE, with year-on-year drops in level of uptake. This decrease has hit the traditional subjects of French and German hardest, leading schools to reduce their foreign language provision in order to adapt to the lack of demand.

It has also had a knock-on effect on the number of trainee teachers specialising in foreign languages, with the profession of language teaching recently described as being in ‘decline’. This may be due to a lack of opportunities at secondary school level, and the perceived poor career prospects that come with the decrease in student numbers.

This has also proven to be an issue at primary school level, where educational leaders have bemoaned the quality of provision and lack of teachers with specialised teaching skills. Despite the initiative having been started in 2002, some have complained of a lack of proper training and funding. It has been claimed that a quarter of primary schools were unprepared for compulsory teaching in 2009, and recent research has slammed delivery of teaching across as Britain as ‘catastrophically diverse’.

One report from Cambridge University has gone so far as to say that teaching languages at primary school has little positive impact on learning at secondary level, while others are worried that bad pronunciation by unskilled primary teachers may cause children to make mistakes that need to be ‘unlearnt’ later on.

But while there is concern, the change in educational policy may not have been for the worst. It is generally recognised that teaching a language at primary school has wider positive impacts on children’s general educational development, and that learning foreign languages early on may help get kids excited about building their skills later in education. Indeed, part of the thinking behind the educational policy shift was that learning a language early would help improve kids’ ‘confidence, knowledge and experience’ with other languages. Perhaps the changes will lead to more committed language learners at secondary level, although at present it’s too early to tell.

There’s also hope that the decline in language learning is already in reverse, with optimists pointing to the increasing uptake of Latin as a sign that students are still enthusiastic about language. All in all, the recent nature of the changes means that it’s hard to predict the real impact of an emphasis on earlier learning and greater choice, but it’s also clear that the government commitment to training and funding will be critical if language teaching policy is to be a success.

One. Ask to meet with your boss about any unresolved issues and have a plan to get tasks accomplished.

There may be some things that you aren’t doing and you haven’t received clear communication about those things yet from the boss. Why not take initiative and find out what is it that you might or might not be doing that is causing your boss to look the other way?

Two. Be sure you are spending more time working and less time socializing with co-workers.

As much as we all like to think we can balance talking with working, sometimes we just can’t. There is that one story that we just have to tell and sometimes we go over the time we should tell it. Think about how often you come into the workplace and right away start socializing; rather than, working.

Consider how many times you have sat down to talk with a co-worker about a small task and ended up talking about things like the family, a sporting event, and where you will be taking your next vacation. Your boss most likely was watching even when you think he or she wasn’t.

Three. Take short breaks.

There are those breaks you take when you are just getting up to go to the bathroom and then you come right back to your workspace. Eight. Speak positively about management and co-workers whenever possible.

Nine. Do your homework, learn more about the company and apply what you have learned to the workplace.

When you take the initiative to educate yourself more than what your co-workers do on the company’s needs, you come out ahead! It shows that you genuinely care, that you are a valuable asset, and you desire to move up in the company.

Ten. Don’t expect a raise and/or promotion if you know you haven’t earned it.

If you know there have been complaints about you. You also know the boss isn’t too pleased with your work performance, don’t trick yourself into believing that you and the boss are “cool, great.”

Chances are the boss is watching you more closely to see if you are worth the investment to keep around. You will need to show and prove that you are worth the money and the benefits.

Eleven. Avoid the temptation to snoop through your boss’ things such as: a desk drawer, computer, or bag sitting on his or her desk.

Sometimes it drives employees crazy to find out what is going on with the boss or with their positions with the company. Some will go so far as to look on a computer hard drive, check locked files and do other things to find out what is going on in the company.

Different Learning Styles in Public Schools

In addition to classic public schools, there are those that operate with slightly different styles. These are chartered educational facilities that are funded by tax dollars so that the tuition is free to the families in attendance. These are similar to private academies except no tuition is required. Many families are choosing these unique educational facilities for a variety of reasons. These families may be drawn to enroll their children in alternate programs because of curriculum, size, and philosophy.

Curriculum

Traditional public schools adhere to a district-wide curriculum. This means that the books, lessons, and standards of learning are decided upon by a governing body such as the school board or district administration officials. Typically, a traditional curriculum is one-size-fits-all. Parents may want something different for their children and at the charter academies, this is possible. As long as the learning standards are met, various teaching techniques can be used. For example, academics may be woven into art-based programs, or those that focus on sports, or through Montessori hands-on materials. Learning styles differ so the one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t always fit for everyone. Luckily there are options available in both charter and private learning facilities.

Size

The size of charter public schools often differ from traditional settings, as well. Many of the campuses are smaller with fewer students in each classroom. Having lower student-to-teacher ratio allows for more one-on-one interaction which can have a substantial impact on educational outcomes. Having smaller campuses often creates a close-knit community atmosphere where teachers, students, and parents get to know each other quite well.

Philosophy

Some parents want their children to learn in an environment with strict rules and a tough love philosophy. Others want their kids to learn in a nurturing, gentle, earthy environment where they tend gardens, raise animals, and have a follow-the-child philosophy. Charter and public schools cannot have religious or spiritual philosophies but private academies can. This is because the U.S. Constitution guarantees the separation of church and state, so learning facilities that are funded by taxpayers cannot teach religion.
